The East Lansing Rotary Club and the Kroger Company have teamed-up to provide turkey dinners on Thanksgiving Day for the homeless families served by East Lansing-based Haven House. Founded in 1983, Haven House provides emergency housing and support services for one-parent and two-parent families with children. The shelter helps families who are homeless prepare for permanent housing by developing and promoting self-sufficiency, stability, and financial responsibility.
The Rotary Club is providing three dinners and Kroger is donating two dinners to this effort aimed at making the Thanksgiving Day holiday a little brighter for the 30 family members currently receiving assistance from Haven House. Each turkey dinner includes: a 10-12 lb. turkey, 3 lb. potatoes, 2 lb. stuffing, 1 lb. gravy, 1 lb. cranberry relish and a pumpkin or apple pie.
A certificate for the dinners was presented to Haven House Director Angie Mayeaux by East Lansing Rotary Club President Kevin Gray and Lake Lansing Road Kroger Store Manager Xavier Williams at the Club’s November 23, 2009 meeting. “This project is just one of the many efforts that our Club members have undertaken to serve the community,” said Gray. “We’re pleased to partner with the Rotary Club and be a part of this effort,” added Kroger’s Williams.
In addition to the turkey dinners, the E.L. Rotary Club also donated seven “exit baskets” filled with cleaning supplies to Haven House. Haven House provides an “exit basket” to each family that leaves their program to go into housing on their own. Each “exit basket” contains 35 different household items, including: a laundry basket, sponges, tub/tile cleaner, disinfectant spray, toilet bowl cleaner, toilet bowl brush & holder, dish soap, laundry soap, bar soap, dryer sheets/fabric softener, 2 buckets, mop, broom, dust pan, furniture polish, window cleaner, floor cleaner, pan scrubbers, paper towels, toilet paper, kitchen cleaner, bleach, Pine Sol cleaner, shampoo, deodorants for men & women, a hairbrush and comb, room deodorizer, band-aids, first aid cream, pot holders, comet, baking soda, trash bags, a small trash can, and toothpaste.
“We’re really appreciative the efforts of Rotary and Kroger to provide a wonderful dinner on Thanksgiving Day for our families. And, the “Exit Baskets” donated by the Rotary Club will be a big boost in helping seven families get settled into their own housing,” commented Haven House Executive Director Angie Mayeaux.
The Rotary Club of East Lansing has a long record of community service dating back to its formation in 1961. The Club currently has nearly 100 members and has supported a broad spectrum of community projects, like the Playground in the Park at Patriarche Park, the East Lansing Softball fields and Aquatic Center and the renovation of Haven House.
The Kroger Co. Headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio (NYSE:KR) is one of the nation’s largest grocery retailers, with fiscal 2008 sales of $76.0 billion. Kroger operates five supermarkets in the Lansing area.

Hello, everyone. At yesterday’s meeting (Nov. 2) we talked about a couple of projects to assist the families @ Haven House — providing Thanksgiving dinner for them and “exit baskets” for the organization to give to families relocating to housing of their own. More information about each of these efforts can be found in the previous post (see below).
Your response to these projects was amazing — and very generous — as those in attendance contributed $344 toward making these projects a reality. That amount represents 86% of our $400 goal for these projects. WOW!! A heartfelt THANK YOU to each and every one of you who contributed to this effort!
If you missed this week’s meeting, but will be attending the Nov. 9 meeting, we will be accepting donations at that time or you can make a donation via check payable to the E.L. Rotary Club.
Once again, thank you for your generous support of Haven House.
Best regards, John Saltzgaber

For a number of years the members of the Rotary Club of East Lansing have generously supported Haven House and its efforts to assist homeless families. Thanks to you, Haven House has been able to make substantial improvements in its facilities. As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, we have a couple of opportunities to share our abundance with those who are not as fortunate.
Turkey Dinners
This year our Rotary Club plans to provide the 30 family members at Haven House with a memorable and Happy Thanksgiving. Our goal is to provide 5 complete turkey dinners — turkey, potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberry relish and dessert — on Thanksgiving Day for these families. Your generosity can turn this goal into reality!
Haven House “Exit Baskets”
Haven House provides “exit” baskets to each family that leaves their program to go into housing on their own. These baskets contain 35 different household items. Our Club’s goal is to present at least two “Exit Baskets” to Haven House Executive Director Angie Mayeaux at our November 23, 2009 meeting. Your generosity will provide a big boost in helping two families get settled into their own housing. Each “exit basket” contains:
a laundry basket, sponges, tub/tile cleaner, disinfectant spray, toilet bowl cleaner, toilet bowl brush & holder, dish soap, laundry soap, bar soap, dryer sheets/fabric softener, 2 buckets, mop, broom, dust pan, furniture polish, window cleaner, floor cleaner, pan scrubbers, paper towels, toilet paper, kitchen cleaner, bleach, Pine Sol cleaner, shampoo, deodorants – men & women, hairbrush/comb, room deodorizer, band-aids, first aid cream, pot holders, comet, baking soda, trash bags, small trash can, and toothpaste.

Our upcoming meeting on November 2 will be the first Monday of the month. Every first Monday, we encourage our members to bring non-perishable food items that we can donate to the Greater Lansing Food Bank. Be sure to bring whatever you can to the meeting, and ask friends, family & co-workers to contribute!

Mayor Victor W. Loomis, Jr. – a member of our East Lansing Rotary Club – will undergo cardiovascular surgery on Tuesday, July 21 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.
Loomis expects to miss the July 28 City Council work session and the Aug. 11 City Council meeting. He plans to return to a full work schedule after Labor Day which will include participation in the Sept. 1 City Council meeting.
According to Loomis: “The surgery will come at the end of a most thorough personal physical exam. With the exception of the cardio work, my doctors have advised me that I am of very good health and in very good physical condition. My heart is in very good condition and nothing related to the vascular work has caused it any damage. The work is being done at this point to ensure that I will remain of good health and physical condition and to alleviate potential future concerns.”
“Those of you who know me, know that I enjoy a most active and energetic lifestyle. I look forward to returning to my normal routine with an even heightened level of energy,” Loomis said. “My recovery will take place at my home in East Lansing where I will have full access to my normal communication channels, will have mobility and will be able to stay current with all City activities. My thanks to all for your continuing support.”
Additional information regarding the mayor’s condition will be released as it becomes available.
